Guide · multilingual PrestaShop

How to translate a PrestaShop store into multiple languages.

Making your store multilingual, yes — but without breaking your SEO. Here are the three methods, the one to choose (real pages per language with hreflang), the concrete steps, and the pitfalls to avoid.

The 3 methods — and which to choose

Browser widget

Translates on the fly in the visitor's browser. Fast, but not indexable: Google never sees your translated pages. Bad for SEO.

Manual translation

You type every field in every language. Full control, but very slow and costly on a real catalogue.

Real translated pages (recommended)

An AI module fills PrestaShop's native multilingual layer: one page per language (/en/, /es/…), indexable, with hreflang. The right speed/SEO balance.

The right method, step by step

Make your store multilingual in 4 steps

  1. 1

    Add the language in PrestaShop

Localization → Languages. The language (and its pack: date and currency formats) is downloaded from PrestaShop's official servers.

  2. 2

    Install a translation module

Back office → Modules → Upload a module → your .zip file. An AI module translates the content automatically, with no technical skills required.

  3. 3

Tick your target languages and run

Select the languages you want to offer, then run the translation: products, categories, CMS pages and the theme interface.

  4. 4

Check URLs and the language switcher

Each language should have its own URL (/en/, /es/…) with an hreflang tag, and a visible language switcher on the storefront.

Don't miss

The pitfalls that cost you

Forgetting categories and CMS pages. The menu and the "Shipping / Terms" pages often stay in the original language — the store looks half-translated.
Overwriting your fixes. A good module never re-translates a field you've edited by hand.
Neglecting URLs (slugs) and hreflang. Without a clean URL per language and an hreflang tag, Google won't rank your pages in the right country.

Frequently asked questions

Is PrestaShop multilingual out of the box?

Yes, PrestaShop handles multiple languages natively (one URL per language, a switcher). But it does not translate the content for you: adding a language creates empty fields you must fill. An AI translation module automates that filling.

Is a translation widget (like Google Translate) enough?

For SEO, no. A widget translates in the visitor's browser: Google does not index those versions. To be found in each country you need real pages per language (/en/, /es/…) with hreflang tags — which is what PrestaShop's native multilingual support provides.

Should I translate categories and CMS pages too?

Yes. Many solutions only translate product sheets and leave the menu (categories) and CMS pages (Shipping, Terms, About) in the original language. For a truly multilingual store, everything must be translated.

Does automatic translation hurt my SEO?

On the contrary, done well: real translated pages, with clean URLs and hreflang tags, help your listings rank in each market. The risk isn't translation — it's duplicate content or a non-indexable widget.

How long does it take to translate a store?

With an AI module, the initial translation of an average store takes a few minutes per language (products + categories + pages), once. After that, each new product can be translated automatically.
